It’s important to care for your skin whatever your age but as you get older you should acknowledge the changes in your complexion and know how to nurture your glow.

Turning 50 is fabulous and with Lumity’s attitude that your best age is NOW we hope you’re living life to the full. But we also recognise that age does throw a few extra curveballs your way and your skin does have a bit more to contend with.
So while you should embrace your fine lines and wrinkles there are tips to help your skin look it’s very best for it’s age too.

Wear sunscreen every day

We know you’ve probably heard it a million times before, but protecting your skin from sun damage is probably the most important thing you can do for your skin. It doesn’t matter if it’s overcast, sunny or tipping with rain, you should wear sunscreen. And if you reach the 5-0 milestone and haven’t done so, it’s not too late.
To prevent skin cancer and further damage to your skin reach for sunscreen with a minimum of SPF 30 and put it on each and every day. Also keep sunbathing to a minimum. Try to stay in the shade or cover up when the sun is at it’s hottest with a big hat and sunglasses as well.

Cleanse

Put down the soap and back away! As you age your skin gets drier and wrinkles can start to show. Since cleansing is an imperative step in your skincare routine it’s important to find a cleasner which won’t dry it our further.
Rather than skipping this crucial step invest in Lumity’s 4-in-1 cleanser which cleanses, exfoliates, removes makeup and acts as a face mask.

Find an Oil

You may have used the same moisturiser your whole life and you don’t want to change. That’s ok as long as it’s still doing it’s job. But consider adding an oil to your beauty regime too. Lumity’s Skin Nutrient’s Facial Oil helps hydrate your skin, plump it up naturally and leave it looking dewy and smooth.
In fact 73% of users noticed a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles after only 4 weeks.

Exfoliate

Exfoliating your skin is key to getting rid of the dry, dead skin and making way for the fresh skin underneath. Flaky skin is ageing and can make you complexion full and old looking. If you’re worried that your skin is too sensitive for exfoliation try using a gentle one just a couple of times a week. Or Lumity’s 4-in-1 cleanser is so gentle you can use it every day, twice a day.

Use Natural Products

It can be tempting to go down the route of chemical peels and overly processed products in a bid to look younger. But you can give your skin an incredible boost and a glowing complexion with all-natural products that won’t damage your skin. Lumity’s Day and Night-time Supplements, it’s 4-in-1 cleanser and it’s nourishing skin nutrients facial oil contain only natural ingredients.

Have a facial

Once a month treat yourself to a professional facial. While you can give yourself a DIY facial massage at home every day – just like A-list facials Nichola Joss suggests – as you age you can definitely benefit from a salon treatment too. A facial helps boost the skin’s circulation and stimulate collagen production which helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Exercise

If you’ve never exercised it’s not too late to start and if you’re already active keep it up. Exercise helps your vital organs and your waistlines and your skin benefits too.
By increasing the circulation through your body, more nutrients and oxygen is getting delivered to your skin cells, which gives you a healthy complexion.
Plus exercise reduces stress, which we know is bad for our skin too.

Use luke warm water to wash your face

Sorry, but those long hot baths you’ve been loving your whole life aren’t actually doing your skin any favours. In fact it’s even suggested you use luke warm water on your face too. Too hot water strips the skin of it’s natural oils and dries it out.

Eat a balanced diet

Eating right not only helps your waistline but it benefits your skin too. You should feed your skin from the inside out. Eating processed, sugary or fatty foods will play havoc with your skin. So if you want to improve your overall health and look good too then pack your diet with fresh fruits and vegetables, load up on antioxidants like blueberries and strawberries to help fight against premature ageing and add fish – containing omega 3 fatty acids – like salmon and tuna to your diet too.

Take them consistently and you can expect to start seeing long lasting results in a matter of months.

Check your skin

Your skin does naturally change as you age but you should keep an eye out for changes which may worry you, like new moles or changes to existing ones. Have a check up with your doctor once a year and regular check your own skin and contact a professional if you’re concerned at all.

Quit smoking

Nicotine causes blood vessels in the skin to narrow and the oxygen and essential nutrients can’t get around the body and benefit the skin. Smoking also decreases collagen production. So keep wrinkles at bay by putting down the cigarette packet and walking away. Remember it’s not too late to help your complexion and your health for that matter, even if you’ve been a smoker all your life.

Cut down on sugar

Cake dates are great and it’s important to make time to meet up with your friends. But tucking away sugary treats on a too regular basis won’t do anything good for your skin, even if your social life is out of this world.
Sugar can kill off collagen as well. It attaches to collagen and weighs it down leaving skin dry and dull. It also causes wrinkles through a process called glycation.

Drink more water

As you age – especially post 50 – the elasticity of your skin decreases as the production of collagen and elastin slows down. To hydrate and plump up skin cells, and reduce the risk of premature sagging and wrinkling skin you should ensure you’re drinking plenty of water. Try to consume at least eight 8oz glasses a day and remember you can get your water through fruits and vegetables with high water content, like watermelons and strawberries. You can also opt for fruit infused water and teas too.
