The Most Potent Age-Busting, Mood-Lifting, Beauty-Boosting Superfood

We’re huge fans of turmeric at Lumity, and as summer fades into winter in the Northern Hemisphere and everyone starts to feel down and tired, it’s a wonderful spice to add to your diet – especially as its active ingredient curcumin been shown in many cases to be as effective at battling depression as Prozac.

As well as helping with weight loss and hundreds of health ailments, turmeric is a potent antioxidant and is a superfood which packs a powerful punch for anti-ageing and gorgeous skin.

Kerri Beaumont, who is a French Riviera-based yoga instructor, tells us that an easy way to get a shot of turmeric’s magic is to add it to a freshly squeezed juice:

“It’s never too late to take charge of what you put in your body,” Kerri tells Lumity. “In a matter of days you can feel a big difference. Drinking your juice first thing in the morning can give you a natural energy boost. Since the juice is already in an easily digestible form, it can help revitalise your energy levels within as little as 20 minutes.

“Try my easy ‘Turmeric Sunrise’ recipe. I usually clean organic turmeric root with a toothbrush and apple cider vinegar, and juice it together with organic Sicilian lemons and fresh pineapple. The result is earthy, zesty and downright delicious. Pineapple is loaded with bromelain, which speeds up healing and reduces inflammation.

“Or, perhaps try ‘Papaya Gold’. Like a fine wine, this juice has a nose that signals the intensity on the palate. The turmeric that’s available at the moment is gigantic and you can juice it whole with the skin on if it’s organic. It is earthy and rich and I  mixed it with papaya, a few cubes of golden beet, some pineapple and an organic lime.

“Turmeric is a powerhouse: anti-inflammatory, anti-depressant, prevents cancer and it’s an antioxidant that supports brain function and improves heart health.”

Kerri adds that she discovered juicing whilst on a retreat in Spain (sounds divine) and has been a devotee ever since:

“I started making juices after a week long yoga and juicing retreat at Shanti Som in Spain,” Kerri explains. “Amazing place. I felt fabulous and wanted to keep the feeling going for as long as possible.

“And twice a year, I substitute juice for food that you chew for five days. It gives my digestive system a rest, and is a wonderful challenge. It’s like pressing a reset button. Cntrl + Alt Delete for the body and mind.”

And, the fabulous Huda Kattan (who has notched up an incredible 15.3 million followers worldwide thanks to sharing her beauty secrets on Instagram) uses turmeric as a face mask when she’s battling acne or dark circles. She posted the following recipe, along with a how to video (below).

Huda writes: “Turmeric has amazing antioxidant properties! It reduces inflammation and redness, promotes skin healing, and softens lines and wrinkles.

“Here’s the recipe for this amazing acne fighter:

“Ingredients:

“1 teaspoon of turmeric

“1 teaspoon of raw organic honey

“1 teaspoon of natural yoghurt

“1 teaspoon of lemon juice – optional (great for lightening the skin and fighting oil)

“Put all the ingredients into a small bowl and mix together well. You can adjust the amount of the yogurt you use to make the thickness as you like but make sure it’s a firm paste that will stick to your face. Turmeric is a dye and it can stain anything, so you don’t want it dripping off your face.

“Apply the mask evenly all over your face. Let the mask dry on your face for 20 minutes and then wash it off with cool water. Dry your face gently with a face towel. You can repeat this mask ever few weeks.

“The only side effect is that turmeric will turn your skin a little yellow since it is a dye but that can be cleared using a cotton pad and facial toner.

“Turmeric is a good antioxidant, and an anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial agent. Honey is a great moisturiser and yogurt is a great exfoliator.”
