32 things every woman over 50 needs to know

By the time you celebrate your 50s you may consider yourself a veritable expert on life and life experiences (and you probably are), but there’s a whole lot more that happens in and beyond your fifth decade, which you may not have accounted for.

There’s more to life than what you weigh

Turf the scales out the window and focus on your health, your family and your friends instead of obsessing about having the perfect body.

It isn’t downhill after 50

Forget the notion that nothing good is going to happen now that you’re past 50. Many people insist life actually gets way better. You’re more content, less stressed and even more confident.

You can still change careers

Don’t let age stop you doing what you truly love. Plenty of women post 50 are now launching new careers. Look at 80-year-old Beate Howitt! She finally fulfilled her dream of becoming a model as an octogenarian and that was after getting her degree at 60 and her MA in her 70s.

Strength training is for you

As you age you lose muscle mass and so strength training keeps you strong! But it doesn’t have to mean masses of weights in the gym. Yoga, Pilates or even a routine using your own body weight at home will go a long way.

Wrinkles aren’t bad

Those fine lines on your face – which are beautiful – tell a story. Think of them as memories, of all the times you’ve laughed and cried, and embrace each and every one of them.

You need good friends

Good friendships are hard to find, so if you have a pal who makes you laugh and doesn’t judge you, hold on tight to them.

Regular exercise is imperative

A little exercise goes a long way. Carving out just 30 minutes a day to get the blood pumping will keep you physically and mentally strong.

It’s not too late to start exercising

Even if you’ve never exercised in your life, don’t use being 50+ as an excuse not to start. You can overall your health by adding a little activity, no matter what your age.

Gratitude is the basis for happiness

You may have spent your life looking at what other people have and not appreciating what is in front of you. Learning to be grateful, even for the smallest things, will bring you so much happiness.

There’s more to life than money

Money might make the world go round, but the best things in life are also free! You’ll realise you can get so much without money including love, family and laughter.

Keep learning to stay young

Keep your mind young and your body will follow. There’s always something new to learn and staying interested and mentally alert will keep you youthful.

The grass isn’t greener

Stop peeking over the fence and convincing yourself it’s better over there, because it never is.

You should laugh at yourself

As you get older you’ll regain the childish ability to giggle at yourself and be a clown without worrying what other people think and that sense of humour is refreshing for you and everyone around you.

Fear will be less of a factor

You may think you were bold and brave when you were in your 20s but actually many women find they get their gusto later in life and are no longer afraid to take the plunge.

Ageing is a privilege

As you move through life and people come and sadly go, it becomes ever more apparent that ageing is a privilege and shouldn’t be taken for granted.

Quality sleep is key

Sleeping isn’t a luxury, it’s at the epicentre of your wellbeing. So if you have spent the last couple of decades surviving on five hours a night, it’s time to make a good night’s sleep a priority.

You only get one life

It sounds so simple, but life is for living and the sooner you realise that the better.

You’re perfect as you are

There’s nothing wrong with striving to be the best possible person you can be but also be aware you may already be there!

There’s more than one type of beautiful

Don’t waste time trying to fit the mould. Beauty isn’t a one size fits all situation so break free.

It’s ok to say no

You don’t have to feel guilty for saying no! Going through life saying yes to everything is truly exhausting. Give yourself a break and don’t feel bad for bring the word ‘no’ into your vocabulary.

You won’t please everyone

There really is absolutely no pleasing everyone. So stop wasting your time trying to make everybody happy and focus on the people that truly matter.

Sex can still be great

Sex doesn’t have to go to wayside in your 50s, 60s 70s and beyond. It may not be as frequent but it’s quantity over quality now.

It’s ok to be alone

Being alone doesn’t have to be lonely. In fact enjoying your own company after years of hustle, bustle and noise may be refreshing.

Mindfulness matters

Don’t sweat the small stuff

In the grand scheme of things the little things really don’t matter. Don’t get wound up by things that aren’t important. Stop and think before you let stress kicks in over something insignificant.

A balanced diet and regular exercise will help keep your heart healthy so if you haven’t been looking after your ticker, it’s time to start.

Self-care isn’t selfish

Whether you’ve spent your life looking after other people or not, it’s ok to look after yourself too. Me-time every day is not selfish. Even if it’s just 20 minutes to read your book, stop feeling guilty and take the time for self-care.

Be confident to eat alone

Why shouldn’t you enjoy a slap up meal just because you’re by yourself? It’s perfectly acceptable to dine alone if you want to and we assure you nobody is looking.

If you’re happy, why on earth does it matter what anybody else thinks?
