A fully functioning metabolism helps keep you at a healthy weight and your energy levels up. So if you feel you’re packing on the pounds and feeling fatigued then you might want to give your metabolism an all important boost.

We often hear of people saying they’re burdened with a slow metabolism or blessed with a fast one but it’s not just what you’re born with, because there are things you can do to optimise your metabolism and some of them might just surprise you.

While you’ve likely heard that strength training, HIIT workouts and quality sleep can speed up your metabolism there are a few other things you can try to up your metabolic game.

What is your metabolism?

Metabolism is the process of converting the food and drink you consume into energy. A fast metabolism is what will keep you healthy and your weight in check too, whereas if yours is slow you can feel sluggish, tired and bloated.

In fact metabolism is a chemical process that goes on inside your body continously and keeps you alive. It keeps your organs functioning properly so that you can breathe, digest food and repair cells too. This process needs energy!

Since you need more energy to maintain muscles than you do fat, it makes sense that more muscly people have a faster metabolism.

Eat mint

Mint doesn’t just keep your breath fresh it contains a number of nutrients that are essential to a smooth running metabolism. These nutrients include calcium, vitamin A, C and B2. Omega 3-fatty acids, copper, potassium, iron, manganese and magnesium as well.

You won’t get much of the benefits from chewing a bit of gum but add mint tea to your daily regime or pop some mint leaves on top of your salad and your metabolism will thank you.

Do HIIT workouts

We know strength training ups muscle mass, but there’s another workout which burns fat by increasing metabolic rate even once you’re exercise regime is done. HIIT routines – High Intensity Interval Training – are speedy but intense workouts which burn lots of fat and help mix up your exercise too.

Add in a few of these into your weekly physical activity for a great boost to your metabolism. They don’t take very long either so you can get a meaningful workout in 20 minutes or less.

Drink cold water

It makes sense that replacing sugary drinks with water will drastically reduce your calorie intake and keep the pounds off. But drinking chilled water can also speed up your metabolism – albeit temporarily.

So rather than reaching for the coffee when you wake up, grab a 16oz glass of cold water instead. You can still have your caffeine fix afterwards.

It’s been shown that people consumed that amount, or more, of chilly H20 had a boosted metabolism for an hour and a half after they drank it.

Eat spicy food

Spice up your life with a sprinkling of the hot stuff. Capsaicin is a compound found in hot peppers and chilies and it can speed up your metabolism by 15 – 20% for a couple of hours after eating it.

Cayenne pepper is a great spice to add to your life because it can also suppress your appetite and stop your cravings for sugary and salty snacks too.

Other ways to boost your metabolism include:

  • eat more protein
  • drink green tea
