The incredible benefits of barley water and how to make your own

The benefits of eating the power grain that is barley have been well-documented, but we think it’s time to raise a glass to it’s liquid sidekick – barley water.


Sipping barley water throughout the day has been proven, amongst other things, to aid weight loss, flush out toxins, improve digestions, protect against wrinkles and boost your immune system; and on top of that, it tastes great.

So here’s an easy to follow recipe so you can begin reaping the barley water rewards too.


Lemon Barley Water Recipe



75g of pearl barley


2 lemons – juice and zest

3 tbsp honey


Rinse the barley by putting it in a sieve and running it under cold water until the water runs clear

Simmer the barley in 1.5litres of water for 20 minutes.

Remove from heat and add the lemon zest

Steep for 20 more minutes

Strain the zest and barley and add the lemon juice and honey to the barley water

Sit back and relax with your taste bud tantalising beverage and revel in all the good it’s doing for your body.

Due to it’s high fiber content barley keeps you fuller for longer which helps curb overeating and snacking. It also stimulates the metabolism of fats as well as reducing the risk of obesity.

 – Treats UTIs

Barley water helps flush out toxins and bacteria which causes infections. Therefore if you have a urinary tract infection drinking barley water is a great remedy especially since it’s also a natural diuretic and increases urination.

 – Boosts the Immune System

The high levels of vitamin C, copper, iron and manganese in barley water helps improve the immune system.

 – Good for Your Heart

Barley water not only helps lower high blood pressure and cholesterol, but it also contains B vitamin niacin that’s been proven to slow the development of the condition atherosclerosis, that causes the arterial walls to thicken.

 – Improves Digestion

If you suffer from the likes of constipation, gastritis or hemorrhoids, drinking fiber packed barley water is a great idea. It promotes digestion and if you have a bout of diarrhea it can assist too by restoring electrolyte balance and fluids too.

 – Gives You Glowing Skin

Barley water contains selenium which keeps the elasticity in your skin and protects it from damaging free radicals.
