As she says herself, she’s Flawless. Not only does she never age, she started off pretty amazing to start with. But she didn’t really wake up like this – she’s had help to get that glow and we can now reveal the secrets the professionals use to make sure she’s always picture perfect.
Slapping amazing make-up on skin which is not at its best is never going to give the greatest results, which is why Beyonce makes sure she takes care of her skin with the best in the business. The star is a regular in the office of top dermatologist Dr. Harold Lancer. He has strict set of rules for his clients to adhere to before they even make themselves comfortable in his treatment chair. Lancer advises reducing stress, getting enough sleep, avoiding carbs and salt and using his three step skincare method daily – which can take up to twenty minutes.
While he calls most facial scrubs “sandpaper in a bottle”, he insists that there’s one product that you should never be without – sunscreen.
“All day, every day! Going about your day without protection is one of the most damaging things you can do to your skin,” he says. “Regardless of the weather, using a sunscreen of at least SPF 30 is essential to protect your skin from the damaging effects of the sun.”
And, for anyone who says they have no time for a skincare regime, Lancer has no sympathy. “Taking care of your skin should be an automatic part of your day and as natural as brushing your teeth!” he says.
Making sure her brows are on point so her face is truly ready for make-up is a Beyonce life lesson we could all bear in mind – when your brows are ready you instantly look groomed. The perfect combination of arched and brushed up whilst still being straight enough are thanks to celebrity make-up artist Sir John.
The man responsible for the brows of almost every supermodel including the likes of Jourdan Dunn and Karlie Kloss, certainly knows his stuff. And thankfully he’s happy to pass it on! Sir John advises us to steer clear of anything too dramatic, so no extreme arches, and instead stick with a straighter brow. He advises using ‘lateral sweeping movements with your go-to brow product’, tapering the stroke as you reach your outer eye to create a soft shape. And if you want the secret to Beyonce’s look even when she’s sweating up a storm on stage – it’s kids glue! The non-toxic liquid kind you used to probably like painting on your hands and peeling off! “It doesn’t irritate the skin and doesn’t damage the hair,” says Sir John. “All you need to do is put a little bit on an eyebrow brush for a flawless look that lasts all day.” Wow. Just wow.
There’s no doubt Beyonce has bucket loads of natural charisma, but all eyes are on her when she’s at an event, partly because her clever make-up is drawing us in.
“The first time I did Beyoncé’s makeup, I gave her radiant, healthy-looking skin and kept the rest of her face simple. She loved it – and couldn’t believe how little time it took!,” says make-up artist Mally Roncal who has also worked with Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez, Rihanna, and Angelina Jolie. “I may change things up with her lip or eye look, but her glow stays the same. It’s all about brightening up the center of the face, which is what people focus on when they look at you.”
To get the look use a liquid concealer one shade lighter than your skin tone between and below your brows, under the eyes, above your lip, and on your chin. Blend in and then use highlighter (champagne on fair skin and gold on medium to dark skin) to illuminate the areas light naturally hits the face, so your upper cheekbones, brow bones, bridge of the nose, inner corners of the eyes, and Cupid’s bow.
Then for that healthy, radiant look, add bronzer. “It’s the only product that can give you that healthy, natural glow,” explains Mally. She advises a powder bronzer no more than two shades darker than your natural skin tone and avoiding products with too much shimmer. The apply it in a clever way. “I know it sounds nuts to focus on the outside of your face, but it’s key to making the colour look like the real deal,” she says. So Mally starts by dusting from below the ear to the jaw then between the temples. Then lightly bronze the areas the sun would naturally hit your face – cheekbones, nose, and chin. Don’t forget to use blusher as well, on the apples of your cheeks in a pink tone as Mally says this is the key to making bronzer look natural.
