If you haven’t heard of the Kakadu Plum before then you heard it here first! In beauty circles it’s a new ingredient which is making its name for excellence in sun care, face and hair masks, as well as shampoo and conditioners.

What is the Kakadu plum?

A native fruit of Australia, the Kakadu plum is yellow-green in color and about the size of an almond and has exceptional nutritional and antiseptic properties. It’s always been used as a food and medicine in Northern Australia – when it’s fruit is in season from March to June it’s eaten, then the rest of the year the tree sap is consumed to treat joint inflammation, and the bark has been traditionally used to treat burns, rashes and infections. The Kakadu plum is also known as Bush Plum, Billygoat Plum, Gubinge, Murunga or Kabiny Plum.

The flavour has been compared to that of a gooseberry as it’s slightly tart but with a floral essence. It can be freeze dried and crushed into a concentrated powder then used in foods or creams. The oil can also be extracted from the seeds and sap from the bark used too.

What are the health benefits of the Kakadu plum?

The antioxidant levels found in this unassuming fruit are the reason it is now attracting attention around the world. It has the highest recorded levels of vitamin C of any fruit in the world. To put that in perspective, the Kakadu plum has 100 times the vitamin C content found in an orange. So you only need 1g of freeze dried Kakadu plum powder to match the vitamin C content found in an entire orange!

It’s antioxidant levels are fantastic, over 5 times more potent than the blueberry and it contains iron, Vitamin E and the same amount of folate as found in broccoli. Because the tree grows in a remote and hostile environment it’s developed a rare and unique antioxidant profile unmatched by other plants which is the reason new research is looking at howKakadu Plum could help the treatment of Alzheimer’s.A 2012 study scientifically proved the plums anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic properties which had always been celebrated by the native Australians. The Kakadu plum is also a good source of calcium, magnesium, and fiber.

Why is it such a beauty must-have?

The amazing mix of antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral and antioxidant compounds combined mean Kakadu plums could have an extraordinary effect on skin.  The high vitamin C levels mean they are excellent for reducing dark spots on the skin. The main cause of dark spots, also known as age spots, is exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) light. UV rays stimulate the production of melanin, a substance that gives color to the skin, and when you are over-exposed to UV rays, melanin accumulates in certain areas and in higher concentration. This leads to dark spots. Vitamin C helps protect the skin from UV damage due to its antioxidant properties. Vitamin C is also effective at reducing the appearance of scarring or hyperpigmentation as it naturally lightens the complexion.

When Kakadu Plum is used in natural skincare products, it helps stimulate the production of collagen which can therefore reduce fine lines and wrinkles. It also fights off free radical damage caused by environmental factors such as pollution as well as sun exposure. Their gallic acid content works to restore the skin’s natural barrier, ellagic acid encourages skin elasticity and suppleness. The antifungal and antibacterial properties of these amazing fruits also make them fabulous for anyone who suffers breakouts regularly as they can calm and balance the skin.

You will also see Kakadu plums popping up in hair care products and again this is because of the high levels of vitamin C which helps stimulate the production of elastin and collagen strengthening hair and making it look and feel healthier. Vitamin C can also help increase shine too. There’s no doubt we will be seeing this little magical fruit popping up a lot in the future!
