How to get rid of forehead lines
-Aug 13, Emma Wilder, Beauty -
Forehead lines and wrinkles can be one of the first signs of ageing. While laughter lines can add character to your face (and what better cause of wrinkles is there than laughing?), lines on your forehead can be not only instantly ageing, but also give the appearance of a sterner, more worried demeanour. We take a look at ways to minimise fine lines and wrinkles.
While fine lines and wrinkles can start appearing at any age, wrinkles on your forehead – particularly deep-set frown lines or forehead expression lines between the eyes – usually become noticeable or bothersome after your 20s. People usually start to notice fine lines on their forehead at 30. But while they’re annoying, if you’re struggling with lines on your forehead don’t despair. There are many ways to minimise the appearance of wrinkles – making both diet, beauty and lifestyle changes. There are also cosmetic procedures which can help.
But first things first, there are also ways to stop yourself from getting forehead lines in the beginning – and if you have them already, to prevent them from getting worse. Here’s Lumity’s ultimate guide to forehead lines and wrinkles – how not to get them, how to reduce them and how to make sure they don’t come back.
How to prevent forehead lines in the first place
Prevention is key, so if you don’t already have pesky wrinkles on your brow you’ll want to keep it that way, and there are a few ways you can do this. First up is moisturising. It’s never too early to start using an all natural anti-ageing product like Lumity Facial Oil which is packed with antioxidants to help fight the signs of ageing by restoring the skin’s elasticity. Massage the oil in both morning and night and drastically reduce the chances of those lines ever appearing in the first place.
It’s also important to protect your face and forehead from the effects of a harsh environment which means wearing sunscreen every day and, if it’s cold and windy, protecting your face from getting weathered by wearing a beanie. A wide brimmed hat is also a good idea when you’re out in the sunshine.
Excess worrying can also cause wrinkles and frown lines. Try to reduce the stress in your life any way you can. Yoga and meditation have both been shown to reduce anxiety and some of the ingredients in Lumity supplements are mood boosters too.
Be mindful of the way you move your face. Forehead lines are also created by your facial muscle contractions. And although for the most part these are done subconsciously, it is possible to start controlling them. There are even stickers you can put on your frown lines to restrict the muscle movement.
How to reduce the appearance of forehead lines once you have them
You look in the mirror and all you see are the vertical and horizontal lines which are littering your forehead. But there’s good news if you’ve ever wondered how to get rid of stress lines on your forehead –you can reduce them. Lumity Facial Oil’s powerhouse combination of 32 ingredients will definitely help. In fact 73% of users noticed a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles after only 4 weeks.
Another top tip is to put down the cigarettes if you want to reduce the wrinkles on your forehead. Smoking speeds up your skin’s natural ageing process, so stopping your ten-a-day habit asap can help restore your skin to a more youthful state.
Your diet can make a big difference to your skin too. Too much sugar can leave your skin weak, discoloured and cause it to lose its elasticity. Instead start packing your diet with healthy fruits and vegetables to improve the appearance of wrinkles. In particular tomatoes are great for banishing fine lines. They are rich in the antioxidant, lycopene – which is a natural sunscreen – and they also boost the skin’s pro-collagen levels, not to mention maintain your skin’s elasticity.
Sleep is also vital. Just as your body needs sleep to feel refreshed, so does your skin. As you catch your all-important zzzz’s your skin rejuvenates. If you don’t get enough, your skin doesn’t have the time to recover and those wrinkles on your brow will stay put, or even get worse.
Some people also swear by cosmetic procedures such as derma rolling, facial cupping, chemical peels and microdermabrasion to reduce wrinkles on their face and forehead. More invasive procedures like Botox and collagen fillers are also a temporary fix.
Can you get rid of forehead lines completely?
It depends how deep the lines on your forehead are as to whether they can be eradicated completely.
If you are in your 30s or 40s and you religiously use Lumity facial oil, eat right, reduce stress, apply sunscreen and get enough sleep you will see a huge difference in your skin. You may well see the fine lines disappear completely, and for a substantial amount of time too.
But wrinkles are an inevitable part of ageing and so while you might be able to get rid of them for now, as you head into old age the likelihood is you’ll see some of them returning.
There are of course more drastic measures that can be taken. The most extreme treatment for deep creases is to undergo a facelift where the excess skin is removed and tightened. Wrinkles are eliminated along the forehead and brow and results can last up to 10 years.
Freezing your forehead muscles with a procedure like Botox is a common and quick, albeit expensive, solution to smoothing out your brow. But the effects generally only last between 3 and 4 months.
The same goes for fillers like collagen, fat or hyaluronic acid which add volume to the wrinkles and temporarily eliminate them. Injectable fillers won’t last a lifetime though so you’ll have to go back every 3-6 months.
In short you can get rid of your forehead lines completely but there are no permanent fixes to stop them ever returning.
Fine lines on the forehead – the lowdown
Fine lines are the precursor to full blown wrinkles. If you can reduce fine lines you can stave off those deep creases for much longer. Exposure to harmful UV rays from the sun, a bad diet, lack of an anti-ageing skin regime and stress can cause these fine lines to prematurely appear. But when it comes to the ones on your brow, a lot of it also comes down to repetitive facial expressions such as frowning or surprise.
Although they are temporary to begin with, if you’re a particularly animated person who excitedly raises their eyebrows when telling a story or, on the opposite end of the spectrum, frowns all the time from stress, these fine lines can become deeper wrinkles.
You may not be able to control every muscle contraction in your face but you can help prevent or reduce those fine lines on your forehead by following the tips in this guide and by starting to use Lumity facial oil, which is packed with fine-line fighting ingredients as soon as possible.
Deep forehead lines – the lowdown
The easiest way to get a smooth forehead is by preventing the lines from forming in the first place. But if you’re a little late to the anti-ageing game you may already have deep creases etched on your brow. A lifetime of using the frontalis muscle which raises your eyebrows eventually results in the skin being folded over on itself repeatedly, the creases are then there even when the muscle isn’t twitching.
How to reduce forehead lines
These deep lines are obviously harder to reduce than fine lines and wrinkles but all hope is not lost. Aside from going down the cosmetic procedure route, you can follow the same guidelines as you would for reducing fine lines and even a bit of makeup can go a long way to disguising them.
Foundation and powder can get clogged in the creases and make the deep furrows look even deeper. But putting a reflecting primer underneath your foundation will help camouflage the lines and stop makeup from settling into them. If all else fails, you can always grow a fringe!
Treatment for frown lines on your forehead
As we already know, prevention is key when it comes to lines on your forehead, but if they’re already there, in addition to the health and beauty tips above, there are some other non-invasive treatments you can try:
Massage: Facial massage has been shown to reduce wrinkles and stress too. If you’ve ever wondered, ‘Why do I have so many lines on my forehead?’ A-list facialist Nichola Joss has some advice you’ll want to hear. She swears by morning and night time facial massages with Lumity facial oil to regenerate skin tissue and boost collagen production.
Facial yoga: There are certain facial yoga exercises you can perform to help slow down the progression of wrinkles and, like massage, reduce stress. A popular one is the binocular pose. Cup your forefinger and thumb around the brow like you are looking through a pair of binoculars. Gently pull the skin on the forehead down. Lift your eyebrows without wrinkling your forehead 50 times and then squint 50 times.
Coconut Oil: Massaging coconut oil into your forehead can help to get rid of forehead lines quickly. It’s all natural and a great moisturiser. Hydrated skin is less prone to wrinkles. It boosts the production of collagen and encourages the regeneration of cells in your skin.
How to get rid of forehead lines at home
Silk pillowcases: It’s not just the beauty products you put on your face which keep wrinkles at bay, it’s what you sleep on too. The frictional forces of the skin against a not-so-soft pillowcase can cause skin folding while you’re sleeping and promote wrinkles. Since silk is so soft there’s less friction, so even if you’re tossing and turning or sleep face down you’re less likely to wake up looking like you need a good iron. Also, Silk doesn’t absorb so much moisture from your skin. The more hydrated your skin, the less wrinkles.
Facial stickers: Stick it to forehead wrinkles with facial adhesives like ‘Frownies’. These vegan, cruelty free and painless stickers are applied to the forehead and frown lines to restrict muscle movement like constant frowning or squinting.
