Rosemary might be a tasty addition to your dinner, but this versatile herb has benefits for your skin too. This fragrant botanical makes a fantastic homemade toner, with antiseptic properties that can help to keep skin clear and fresh-looking.
Create a rosemary toner
To make a refining rosemary toner, follow these simple steps: Put 2 cups of water and 2 sprigs of rosemary in a pan and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat and allow the mixture to simmer until the water is reduced by about half. Allow the mixture to cool and then strain. Add in 3 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar and mix in.
You barely even have to lift a finger to source this garden staple. Dandelions might be considered weeds by some, but for skincare enthusiasts they have some wonderful properties. Rich in skin-loving nutrients they’re great for taming conditions ranging from acne to eczema. For a pimple-busting fix, try this quick DIY dandelion remedy…
Make your own dandelion spritz
Gather 2 or 3 dandelions from the garden, including their roots. Make sure you clean them thoroughly to get rid of mud and germs. Put the plants in a 600ml jar and fill to an inch from the top with boiling water. Seal it up and leave it to stand for 3 or 4 days. Strain the mixture into a glass spray bottle. For extra spot- zapping properties, you can also add one or two drops of tea tree oil to the mix.
One of the most uplifting garden herbs, mint is the perfect ingredient if your skin is in need of a little bit of a boost. It helps to soothe itchiness and irritation, as well as brighten dull or sad-looking complexions. And, it’s a natural choice when it comes to a DIY pamper session. Treat yourself to this homemade mint mask…
Mix up a mint mask
Pick 10 to 12 mint leaves from the garden and grind them in a pestle and mortar with 1 mashed banana. Grind away until everything’s looking smooth and well-mixed. Apply to your face, just like any other mask, and leave on for 10 to 15 minutes (you’ll probably want to lie down and keep still – it’s a little slippery). Rinse off your mask with cool water and treat yourself 1 or 2 times a week.
Astounding aloe vera
Aloe vera is a longstanding member of the skincare squad. This super succulent is pretty much fool-proof and is an ideal houseplant for those with less-than-green fingers or a lack of outside space. Well-known for it’s soothing and hydrating properties as well as for healing sunburn, here’s how you can use the humble aloe vera plant at home…
Hydrate and restore with aloe vera
Cut off a leaf of the plant (don’t worry, it will heal itself), making sure that you do so as close as you can to the base. Once you’ve got your leaf, chop off the other end. With a sharp knife, slice of the top layer of skin to uncover the aloe gel. Scrape out the aloe goodness and use as a moisturiser or after-sun treatment.
Chamomile tea has long been a go-to for those suffering with insomnia, but it’s not just the mind that this bloom can calm. With antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, chamomile is also great for keeping your skin in balance. As we all know, it’s not called “beauty-sleep” for nothing, so magic happens when you combine these two uses of chamomile at once…
Calm your mind and your skin with chamomile
Carry out your bedtime beauty routine as normal. Add 3 chamomile flowers into 2 cups of boiling water and allow to stand for 10 minutes. Strain the flowers and pour yourself a soothing cup of chamomile tea. Pop a wash cloth in the remaining liquid and let it all soak in. Apply this to your face (making sure it’s cooled down!) for around 10 minutes, for soft, sleep-ready skin.
