Gwyneth Paltrow on why women get better after 40

Gwyneth Paltrow is a firm believer that life is most definitely not downhill after 40, in fact she says women get better with age!
Gwyneth Paltrow is an award-winning actress, mother and wellness empire founder and she’s 46-years-old and loving life. The star recently said that she’s in early menopause and has noticed various changes, but that she feels confident, strong and sexy and credits that with the power that comes with being a woman over 40.
“I think that when you know yourself well, and you’ve lived your life with lots of ups and downs and you get to be in your 40s, I think that you feel pretty good all the time,” she says.
Gwyneth went through a public divorce when she ‘consciously uncoupled’ from the father of her two children, husband Chris Martin, in her early 40s.
‘I was a mess in my 20s’
They remain friends and she went on to marry TV producer Brad Fulchuk in a picture perfect wedding late last year. And, Gwyneth insists that she’d take her 40s over her 20s any day.
“I would never want to go back,” she says. “I was a mess in my 20s. I’m so thankful to be where I am.”
Gwyneth adds: “I think the 40s are such a gift, and I feel more beautiful now than I did 10 years ago or 20 years ago.”
‘I feel so blessed that I have wrinkles’
The lifestyle guru readily embraces the signs of ageing and hopes other women see them in the same positive light she does.
“Of course I have wrinkles [and] gray hair. But I genuinely love it. This is who I am. I have been through incredible ups and downs and I feel so blessed that I have the wrinkles to tell the story.
“I feel good about [it]. I think it’s incredibly sexy. And I wouldn’t want to erase years off my face or to travel back in time for anything.”
In fact Gwyneth loves the way her vision of beauty has changed as she’s got older.
‘I really know myself and like myself’
“I think there’s a really beautiful thing that happens with age, which is that you start to understand and categorize beauty in a different way,” she explains. “You really do see that it’s an internal process. Accepting yourself and feeling beautiful really has so little to do with the outside and with measurable pulchritude. If you really like yourself, you really feel beautiful.”
Gwyneth says it’s been a journey to not just accept herself but to truly like herself both inside and out.
“It’s been a long interesting road to get to the place where I feel really content and that I really know myself and like myself. I wish they could teach girls to do this when they are 16 instead of 40, but that’s part of life.”
‘At 40 you’re upgraded’
She adds: “At 40, my life changed so much. I think every woman around that time gets this massive software upgrade. You’re just different. You’re upgraded.”
Here at Lumity we absolutely, wholeheartedly agree with that.
Of course with that upgrade does come a few tweaks and Gwyneth addresses those too admitting she’s going through perimenopause – the transition to menopause.
She opened up to her Goop followers and said she was feeling the hormonal changes happening including sweating, mood swings and “feeling furious for no reason”.
But in the grand scheme of things she says that won’t get her down and if she continues to look after herself she’ll continue to be happy too.
‘’I think women get happy by being authentic,” she says. “But I also believe in exercise, eating well, drinking lots of water, sex, sleeping and being around people who make you feel good.”
