Hold onto summer with these skin enhancing mocktails

Cocktails are less than great for our skin, containing high sugar levels and dehydrating alcohol. They can also come as a bit of a shock next day when that drink which went down very easily turns out to be a little more than lethal in the number of units which actually went into it!

These mocktails are so delicious you won’t miss the hit of alcohol and have the added benefit of actually boosting your skin too.

Watermelon, Cucumber and Mint Muddle

Keeping your skin hydrated is key to a glowing appearance as when skin is dehydrated it looks dull and older as it’s drier. Both watermelon and cucumber have a very high water content and so will hydrate and moisturize from the inside out.

Watermelon is also full of antioxidants – including lycopene and vitamins C and A – to help fight off those pesky aging free radicals. Vitamin A is also a skin friend as it can encourage collagen and elastin cell growth. This helps your skin stay young, supple and fuller. Cucumber has complimentary antioxidants to help with the free radical busting and contain electrolytes to help prevent dehydration during the summer.

Ingredients:

Two handfuls of diced watermelon, deseeded

Half a cucumber, roughly chopped

Juice of half a lime

4 mint leaves

Method:

Add all ingredients to a high speed blended and blitz until completely smooth. For a more watery drink sieve before serving over ice.

 Tropical Citrus Burst

This is a real taste of summer which packs quite the skin boosting punch too. Citrus fruits are fab for skin and here the orange provided beta-carotene which is a powerful antioxidant to prevent the signs of aging, while the lemon juice rejuvenates skin. Mango and pineapple are both full of vitamin A as well which helps keep your skin looking young thanks to the collagen promoting quality it has.

Ingredients:

½ mango, peeled and diced

¼ pineapple, peeled and diced

100ml orange juice

Juice of ½  of a lemon

Method:

Place all ingredients in a blender and blitz until smooth.

Grapefruit and Turmeric Glow

While the grapefruit is fighting off free radicals, the fresh turmeric’s anti-inflammatory and antibacterial benefits will ensure your skin stays even and calm as it has a role in repairing damage. The antioxidants in turmeric can also help fight wrinkles and actually help stimulate your body’s own antioxidant defenses. Eating ginger gives you a glow as it helps to increase blood flow too.

Ingredients:

Juice of 5 grapefruit

2inches peeled ginger root

1inch peeled turmeric root

1 tablespoon honey

Sparkling water to top up

Method:

Grate the ginger and turmeric into a jug with the grapefruit juice and honey. Allow the flavours to mix for 30mins-1hr.

Pour juice through a strainer to remove the turmeric and ginger and serve over ice with sparkling water to make a longer drink/to taste.
