How a cleanser can make or break your skin

-Sep 24, Hannah Hargrave , Beauty -

We know your facial cleanser is a powerhouse in your beauty regime but just as the right one can make your skin, the wrong one can break it too.

Not only does dry, dehydrated skin look a little unhealthy, it can feel pretty uncomfortable too. It’s almost impossible to successfully apply makeup to cover up dry skin so you need to make sure rough skin is taken care of with the skincare products you use – and of course with the help of a balanced diet and plenty of water too.

Even if you identify yourself as having oily or combination skin it doesn’t mean you’re not prone to dry skin around your nose or cheeks either. So how can you ensure your skin is primed to perfection? By using the right cleanser.

Should I cleanse if I have dry skin?

If you’re under the impression that cleansing dries out your skin, then you’re using the wrong one.
You may avoid facial cleansing for fear it’s what’s behind your dry skin and if you’ve invested in a harsh soap or cleanser containing chemicals you could be right.
A cleanser should be gentle enough for you to use twice a day to shift dirt, grime and makeup without leaving your skin feeling dry.

What is making my skin dry?

Many foaming skincare products, such as body wash, shampoo, toothpaste and some cleansers contain Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) which is great for creating bubbles but not good for your skin. This ingredient is an incredibly harsh chemical – it’s even used in industrial strength oils, degreasers and cleaners, so you can imagine how it strips your skin.
If your skin is becoming irritated by your product then it’s protective barrier may have been stripped.
Similarly you should avoid products with alcohol or soap in them because they too will leave your skin dry and dehydrated after cleansing.

How do I know if my cleanser is doing more harm than good?

Your skin should feel clean, but not tight, dry or irritated. If your cleanser isn’t leaving your skin clean either then that’s a sure fire sign it’s not working either.

What makes a great cleanser?

While there isn’t a one size fits all cleanser Lumity’s 4-in-1 Cleanse comes pretty close. Since it works with the majority of skin types, is all natural and a multi-purpose skincare product it’s a fantastic option to consider.
Not only does it cleanse, it acts as a makeup remover, gently exfoliates thanks to the biodegradable jojoba beads, and can even be used as a purifying face mask too.
This is a cleanser that can truly give your skin the clarifying boost it deserves.
