How to deal with stress

When it comes to stress the focus is, more often than not, on how to reduce it. But learning to manage it, rather than consuming yourself with how to eliminate it, could be the key to making a stressful life more manageable. 

Stress isn’t all bad, in fact in small doses it’s actually good for us. But a consistent overload can be damaging to your body and your mental health. The way we live today leaves many of us burdened with anxiety and stress, which we add to by worrying about how we can cut it out of our lives. 

Because of this the key may be to understand how to deal with it and in the process you’ll likely discover your stress levels diminish too.

Effective stress management will ultimately lead to a happier, healthier and more productive life so it’s certainly worth investing some time into learning how to do it.

Identify the source

This may sound obvious, and perhaps it is very clear that it’s your job or your finances which are causing you to feel stressed. But what about them is making you so overwhelmed and anxious? If you think you don’t have enough hours in the day to get things done, it could be your procrastination levels which are causing the stress rather than the actual demands of the job. To get to the source of your stress consider writing a stress journal where you can note every time you feel stressed. What you did in response to it and how you made yourself feel better.

You’ll soon start seeing some common themes which you may be able to manage better. 


Get moving to get out from underneath your stresses. Make exercise a regular part of your daily routine and release those feel good endorphins. You may feel like it’s the last thing you want to do, but you won’t regret it. 

To reap the rewards from exercise you don’t have to hit the gym for hours at a time. Work in 30 minutes of physical activity four or five times a week. This could be in the form of a brisk walk or even by adding more movement throughout the day by taking the stairs or squeezing in a few mini-workouts when you can. 

When you’re exercising you’re likely not thinking about how stressed you are and working out boosts your mood as well.

Make me-time

Self care is not selfish, it’s vital for your wellbeing. You need to find time to relax or do something you love and stop seeing this as a luxury. Take a moment, a few minutes or as long as you can a day and focus on enjoyment. It could be something as small as setting aside some time to read a few chapters of a new book or to catch up on your favourite TV show. You may fancy a bike ride, a coffee with friends or some time all to yourself to practice yoga! Whatever it is that brings you joy try to incorporate some of it into your daily life and do not feel bad about it.


Poor time management can cause major stress, and leave you thinking you don’t have time for the things you enjoy or which are healthy for you. But some simple scheduling and a well written to-do list can fix this. 

Make a schedule for the day. Whether this is just three things you want to priortise or a step-by-step guide of everything you want to get done. Some people work better knowing they can tick off their 10.30am meeting, 11am coffee and lunchtime workout as they go along, while others get relief by just putting pen to paper.

Be mindful of putting too many big projects on your list though because this can up the stress levels by just looking at it. Break them down into more manageable sections and you’ll soon feel more in control of your time.

Talk to someone

Bottling up your emotions will not make them go away, and that includes stress. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, share the burden a little with someone else. This could be a good friend, a colleague or a professional, but opening up and admitting the way you’re feeling will be a weight off your shoulders in an instant. 

They may just listen, have advice or be able to completely relate to everything you’re saying. When you share you feel less alone and are more likely to come up with a solution to your woes. 

Eat well

Managing your stress is easier when you’re feeling good about yourself. Poor nutrition can leave you sluggish, fatigued and even depressed, where as the right foods can boost your mood, better your waistline and clear your head. 

Instead of drowning your stressed-out-sorrows in bad habits like eating junk food, smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol, opt for some healthy choices.
