Spring is in the air and that means you can start packing away your winter wardrobe, dusting off the cobwebs and giving your makeup bag a spring clean.

With the sunshine and daffodils that accompany springtime, often comes the urge to brighten up your look, but most of us don’t have a clue where to start.

Luckily makeup expert Candice Meggan was on hand to give Lumity the low down on how to transition your cosmetics bag from winter to spring.

So if you want to fid out what spring 2018 has to offer when it comes to creating the perfect look, read on!

Why should you change up your look for the seasons?

“Seasonal changes are a great opportunity to try something fresh and new and to also completely overhaul your look if you want a change,” explains Candice.

“However, if you find that something works for you and you don’t want to change it then stick with what you know and maybe switch your look up with a different lip colour or a coloured mascara.”

That being said Candice insists changing from one time of year to another can play havoc on your skin and this can be a very good reason to rethink the products you put on your face.

“Seasonal changes cause your skin to change along with it, so the fuller coverage foundation that you were using during winter might not look so good (or stay put) during the summer months.

“Spring is a great time to tone down the heavier makeup and try out some lighter coverage foundations or tinted moisturisers along with fresh new spring colours.”

Is there a look/technique you suggest avoiding whatever the season?

“Instagram brows (those heavy drawn on brows) and thick, caked on makeup are no, no’s” insists Candice.  “It ages you instantly!”

Are there certain colour palettes that’ll be in for spring?

“Every year the Pantone Colour Institute announces a ‘Colour of the Year,’” says Candice. “Colour of the year in 2018 is Pantone 18-3838 Ultra Violet and if you look at the catwalk shows and latest magazines it’s everywhere and its gorgeous!

“I recommend using an Ultra Violet eyeliner or mascara to switch up your look, but if you’re not comfortable using such a bright purple, then by all means go for a soft pastel version with a wash of colour over your lids.

“I recommend smudging it on with your fingers to give an almost undone look. Purple might not be your cup of tea in which case use any colour you like, you can match your eye colour with a pastel version of it in eyeshadow or if you’re a bit braver go for complimentary colours. Be bold and have fun.”

If you could suggest the ultimate item to add to your makeup bag this spring what would it be?

“Just one item? That’s tough,” admits Candice. “It would have to be a choice between Laura Mercier Illuminating Tinted Moisturiser or Sisley’s Sisleÿa Le Teint Anti-Ageing Foundation.

Both products are my top recommendations for your makeup bag throughout spring and summer.

Laura Mercier’s Illuminating Tinted Moisturiser gives you an instant all over glow without a heavy coverage but if you prefer a foundation then Sisley’s Sisleya Le Teint is my go to product.

It’s a lightweight anti-ageing foundation with buildable coverage so you can control how much or how little coverage you want.

Could you describe a great all-round look for Spring?

Eyes – A pastel purple or if you want to be a bit bolder then add an ultra violet eyeliner too, I recommend Marc Jacobs Highliner Gel Eyeliners

Lips – Sheer pinks and nudes are beautiful for spring

Brows – My go to is Sisley Phyto-Sourcils Perfect Pencil, it comes in 4 shades and allows you to draw fine little hairs to give you a more natural fuller brow

Blush – A pale pink or peach cream stick is perfect for spring, Mac Cosmetics do great cream blushes and Nars do an incredible cream blush stick called The Multiple, which you can use on eyes, lips and cheeks. I recommend opting for a cream blush rather than a powder because they give you a healthy glow and you can really blend them out to give just a hint of colour. If you can’t put down your powder blush then just make sure you blend it out with a medium sized blusher brush to diffuse it properly.

If you could only have 5 items in your makeup bag for spring what would they be?

“This is my worst nightmare,” says Candice. “But if I absolutely had to choose 5 it would be the following products:

  • Lumity Skin Nutrients Facial Oil – this product is a constant in my makeup bag be it doing makeup for a client or my own, it’s the first product I use when prepping the skin for foundation
  • Sisleÿa Le Teint Anti-Ageing Foundation
  • Nars ‘The Multiple’ in Orgasm – I can use this item as a lip colour, eye colour and blush it’s incredibly versatile
  • Burberry Cat Lashes Mascara
  • Sisley Phyto-Sourcils Perfect Pencil in #3 Brun
