How to overhaul your lifestyle in 12 weeks: Look younger, feel healthier

It doesn’t matter if you’ve vowed to lose weight, get fit or quit smoking, the results of all of them take time to show. But the good news is, it’s far from a lifetime away. 

If you stick to your regimes and take small steps each day, within 12 weeks you could be looking in the mirror at a brand new you. And, the best news that if you stick to these changes your looks and your health will only continue to improve, helping you live a long, healthy life.

But what lifestyle changes should you start making and why does it take three months to truly see and feel the difference?

Lose weight

Women should aim for one portion of each with every meal. 

Exercise

You need to exercise regularly to see results. Your body won’t change after three sporadic days of random workouts, but make it a daily habit and gradually you’ll start seeing and feeling the difference. You don’t have to make monumental changes and go from a couch potato to working up a sweat for an hour a day. But making small consistent changes to your routine will go a long way. 

At-home workouts are a great way to squeeze more exercise into your day. Aim for 150 minutes of moderate physical activity a week or 75 minutes if you’re going for a higher intensity.

Add three sessions of strength training to your weekly workouts as well, because not only do you lose this as you age, muscle burns more calories than fat!

If you’re strapped for time fit in 10-minute HIIT sessions, get out into your garden and follow a 20-minute stress busting workout – or even do some digging. Alternatively turn up your favourite tunes and have a disco, dancing in your front room. Just get your heart rate up and your body moving each and every day.

Reduce stress

If only there was a quick fix answer to stress and you could click your fingers and feel your woes fall away. Unfortunately there isn’t, but over time though you can gradually reduce your stress levels and learn to better deal with stress too. Since stress is at the epicenter of your health and can contribute to a myriad of conditions inside and out it’s important to reduce it. 

Some things you can start doing from home to bring more calm are:

  • meditation

  • deep breathing
  • scheduling to make your day more organised
  • making me-time
