Is eating late at night ageing your skin?

We know that late-night snacks don’t do much for the figure, but did you know it’s bad for your skin too?

A study has shown that eating late could prematurely age your skin!  So if you’re partial to a midnight feast or regularly cave in to your 9pm cookie craving you might want to rethink your eating habits, not least for the sake of your skin.

Researchers at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas conducted the study on mice and discovered the rodents with abnormal eating habits (for them that meant eating in the daytime rather than at night) also had disrupted circadian rhythms. This in turn tampered with the potency of an enzyme which is key to skin repair. 

In short, it suggests when humans eat outside of their natural pattern it can negatively impact the level of sun protection and therefore leave skin more susceptible to harmful UV rays.

Although the research was done on mice Dr. Joseph S Takahashi, the chair of the department of neuroscience at the University said: “It is likely that if you have a normal eating schedule then you will be better protected from UV during the daytime. If you have an abnormal eating schedule, that could cause a harmful shift in your skin clock, like it did in the mouse.”

How the circadian rhythm affects your skin

If you are regularly staying up late  – not to mention if you’re eating too – and throwing your body clock all out of sync it’s going to take its toll on your general wellbeing and your skin.
