She is one of the most photographed models in the world and Kate Moss admits she sees shoots she’s done in the past and has forgotten she even took part in them! But although Kate may be instantly recognisable, in the almost 30 years at the top of her game, she has managed to keep her private life mostly private. Apart from paparazzi shots where she looks super stylish, we’ve never known a great deal about the ‘real’ Kate as told by herself. Which she says is because she’s too much of a chatterbox: “I don’t give interviews because I’m so sh*t at keeping my mouth shut when I do.”
As she turns this month (on the 16th) it looks like the wild child of modelling is finally starting to settle down. She’s changed her view on exercise from ‘it’s too boring’ to ‘I can see the point’ and changed her diet and drinking habits so she can keep enjoying life at the helm of her new model agency for a longer, “I’ve learned to take care of myself a bit more. I do yoga every day. I don’t go out nearly as much. And I take care of my skin, which somehow has held up.”
After all, genes will only get you so far…
Kate on exercise…
For years the most exercise Kate did was walking a catwalk and hitting up the dance floor as she found the gym dull and even hated the look of work out clothes! But as she’s entered her 40s, she’s upped her movement levels and has discovered it’s not so bad after all!
“I’ve never been a gym bunny or anything like that. I was always, like, ‘UGH’, it made me feel ill, but now I’ve actually started working out, I’m really quite into it,” she admits.
And, in her typical all-or-nothing fashion, Kate really threw herself into her new lifestyle. “I worked out for an hour every consecutive day for a couple of weeks and it was enough that I really started to see the benefits, which I’d never really done before. I always thought ‘this is agony, I’m not coming back. This is torture’. But this time I just kind of pushed through. I honestly lost an inch off my waist in about 10 days. Now I really enjoy it.”
Skin has become a priority
After years of travelling, sunbathing and living life to the max, Kate is the first to admit her skin started to suffer. But Kate has resolved to give her skin a little more TLC now both from the inside though a more nutritious diet and also from the outside too. “Regardless of whether or not I’m working, I just do the same thing all the time. I’ll do a cleanser and a serum and a moisturiser and that’s it. That’s all I need.” Keeping it simple means she is more likely to stick to the regime.
“My skincare routine is really simple – I couldn’t be bothered with loads of products and I’d get them all mixed up and not know what I was doing. I haven’t got the time or the inclination to sit there for ages, putting creams on my face,” she confesses. “I need it to be effective and quick. I’ve been to bed in my makeup on occasions but I wouldn’t make a habit of it, not now. You can always tell the next day. It’s not a good look.”
Kate cooks healthy meals when she can
Living on airplanes, in hotels and at parties in her model days meant that Kate certainly didn’t need to focus on cooking – and a younger metabolism also meant she could get away with a lot. But now she’s at home more Kate has made lasting changes to her diet. “Food is really important, I try to eat healthily,” she admits. “And I do cook, but not as much as I’d like to because I’m busy, but I cook a good roast. I do good breakfasts – eggs are my forte. I really enjoy food, proper food, but I do try to eat more healthily than I used to. I think as you get older you have to. When I was young I was so low maintenance I didn’t have to worry. My skin looks better when I eat well, too. Obviously if you eat all that grease, skin just doesn’t look as healthy. I’ve really noticed an improvement since I’ve been more ‘on it’ with food – like eating salads and all that stuff – I never used to really eat salads. And now I’m like, juicing!”
She’s moving on from modelling
Although Kate still works with the best and hasn’t officially retired from modelling, Kate has moved her focus to new areas. After years in the industry she certainly knows plenty about the business side of modelling, has been commended by photographers for her amazing eye for a good shot and certainly knows talent when she sees it.
In 2016 Kate set up her own modelling agency, The Kate Moss Agency, with a couple of long term friends in the industry. “As a model I am prepared to stand in a bikini at the end of an ice glacier when it’s minus 30, because that is what the client has booked me to do and that’s the job,” she says. “So, as I get older, it seemed like the natural thing to do was to take responsibility for my choices both as a model and with the branding I put my name to.”
And when it comes to a look, Kate is keen to find more than just pretty faces. “I don’t want a generic model agency; I’m looking for characters,” she explains. “Like someone amazing-looking who can also sing and tap dance…” Which is most likely why she’s signed Gwendoline Christie – who is a multi-talented dream.
But she will always guard her privacy…
Unlike many of today’s models who have found fame through social media and become influencers as well, Kate has refused to embrace new technology. “Social media is just not me. I’ve never really liked it – that whole thing of ‘look at me!’,” she says, although she knows how much her teenage daughter Lila loves it. “For me, the more privacy the better, not telling people where I am and what I’m doing. All that is the opposite of what I want to do. I suppose that makes people more interested, I don’t know, but I certainly don’t do it for that reason. It’s not a game plan. I just have to live by my own rules.”
But, Kate has revealed she has a secret Instagram account “with like 25 followers” but she will never let slip the name she uses online.
