Kylie Minogue on turning 50
Australian pop singer Kylie Minogue turns 50 in May – but with her grandmother as her role model, she’s not shying away from her age at all…

Time flies! Somehow pop princess Kylie Minogue, who we’ve watched grow up on screen from her days as a teenager in Neighbours, is turning 50 this year – but she’s not worried one bit.

Kylie Minogue is turning 50! If you’re anything like us that piece of news will come as a bit of a surprise – the ageless pop princess is growing up!

But in typical Kylie fashion, this milestone birthday isn’t something she’s worried about. In fact, she’s excited to be hitting her sixth decade, thanks in part to the amazing role model she has in her grandmother who managed to be cool in her 90s!

“I don’t care a bit,” Kylie said when asked about her impeding birthday. “I’m 49 and proud of it. I always try to think of what my grandmother would do. I once asked her just a few years ago: ‘Nan, how do you do it? You’re just so cool.’ She was 94 at the time, had six children and she had emigrated to Australia from Wales. So she was quite a lady and she said to me: ‘Well, Kylie, you just go with the flow.’ I have never forgotten that, so whatever life throws at you, just go with the flow.”

Going with the flow is something Kylie has had to do a number of times over the years, particularly in 2005 when she was diagnosed with breast cancer.

A broken engagement in 2017 also tested her ability to keep calm and carry on, but she did – and has come out on top.

‘I just wanted to stop, I think it’s called a nervous breakdown,’ she told the Sunday Times of that difficult period in her life. She took herself to Thailand to take some time to process her split from Joshua Sasse, then 30, and to try and ‘heal’.

She managed to come to the conclusion that it ‘wasn’t the right union’.

Ageing is simply another challenge that Kylie has learned to face head on. Constantly in the public eye, she admits she feels the pressure to look young in her career. Minogue knows people expect her to look a certain way – but she refuses to be ‘age-defined’.

A few years ago she revealed she had decided not to use facial injections anymore, and had decided to embrace the passing of time in a more natural way.

“I don’t [use Botox] any more, I won’t go near it,” she said. “I have lines. You can see the lines on my face. I’m preferring to be a lot more natural these days. I’ve tried Botox, I’ve tried it all. I’m definitely not one of those people who says, ‘you shouldn’t do this’.

“Everyone individually can do what they want.”

Of course, at times even Kylie catches sight of herself in a mirror and is surprised by her appearance. “There are lots of times I look in the mirror and I see that gravity has taken hold,” she laughed.

“Or suddenly see my face on a phone or on Skype and it’s like a Spielberg special effect and you just scream, ‘Who is that?’

But in general the ‘I Should Be So Lucky’ singer is feeling exactly that – lucky to be approaching 50 with such an amazing life behind her, and whole lot more to come.

How is she planning to celebrate?

“I do feel like doing something a bit out of character like throw a massive party,” she admits. “That’s not what I normally do, but I think I’m going to do it this year.”

Sounds like a great idea to us!
