Nadia Narain’s 5 minute instant energy yoga routine

Nadia Narain is a highly respected British yoga teacher who, along with her sister Katia Narain Phillips, has written two best-selling wellness books. We’ve filmed a series of yoga tutorials with the wellbeing expert, which are designed so they’ll only take five minutes to complete, but will make a positive difference to how your day begins and ends. First up is Nadia’s energy routine, which is perfect to do in the morning, or after a long and exhausting day.
This energising routine is perfect if you’ve never done yoga before, or if you’re an expert practitioner. You can do it at home, while you’re travelling or at the office. Unless you’ve got a medical condition which prevents you from doing yoga, it’s suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels. All you’ll need is a yoga mat and some comfortable clothes. If you like, you could use a diffuser and fill the room with the scent of your favourite essential oil. For energy, we like to use either wild orange, lemon, lime, basil or peppermint essential oils for an energising start to the day.
Turn off your phone and try to calm your mind and banish any worries before you start the tutorial. A great calming method to use is the 5:5 rule: The idea is that whenever you start to feel annoyed angry, frustrated or worried you stop and consider if the issue you’re focusing on will be a problem in five years. If the answer is no, give it no more than five minutes of your attention and then banish it from your mind. If it will be an issue in five years time, give yourself a five minute break from it.

If you do it each morning, or even just three times a week, you’ll notice that you’re getting the different positions right and you can simply listen to Nadia’s voice as guidance.
If you feel tired, don’t worry! You can simply go into child’s pose, and spend a few moments breathing deeply.
Once you have finished the routine, take an extra minute for a moment of gratitude. Focus on all the good in your life, this can be as simple as being thankful for waking up, for having food and a roof over your head. You can be thankful for the sun shining, or the people in your life. It’s a great habit to get into and is widely believed to be a practice that encourages positive changes in your life. You could also write a few notes in your happiness journal.
