Self-tan: How to fake golden summer skin

It is sometimes easy to forget to apply that all important SPF before stepping out in the April sun, which is a huge no no as it can result in lasting skin damage, including skin cancer. Whilst pale is very much in fashion, some of us love to have a healthy looking tan, so we wondered how best to fake it – without ending up covered in unsightly orange streaks.

Nichola Joss is one of the industry’s most revered skincare and self-tanning experts so we turned to her for some expert guidance on how to protect our skin in the sunshine and how to self-tan.

Step one: Apply a quality SPF

“To keep your skin protected from the sun apply an SPF that contains a high percentage of zinc as this shields the skin keeping it protected,” Nichola tells Lumity. “Only sunbathe for 20 minutes at a time taking time out to sit in the shade making sure you are always protected with SPF. Wear a hat and spend time moisturising every evening to add hydration and calmness to the skin keeping it nourished.”

As for a gorgeous faux golden glow, Nichola says: “Self-tanning can last anything from 5-10 days depending on your skin. Some people get a longer lasting tan than others, if you do home maintenance then the chances of your tan lasting longer and looking amazing are greater.”

Step two: Moisturise and exfoliate every few days as skin prep 

The best way to make your tan last is to keep your skin nourished and exfoliated each and every day: “Start moisturising daily and gently exfoliate every few days, this will refresh your skin, and help the tan fade naturally. Self tan is not an SPF so always use an SPF on exposed skin.”

Step three: To avoid streaks when self-tanning, use a mitt

If you’re worried about streaks, Nichola has a fool-proof way around that, “For a streak free even application I always recommend using an applicator mitt.

“This ensures an even, streak-free finish, without leaving the palms of your hands deeply golden. Swipe the mitt up the body, starting at the feet and moving upwards to cover the whole body, gently buffing the product into the skin. When tanning your hands and feet, don’t add any additional product to the tanning mitt, just use the residue from the body application, this will be enough to tan these areas.”

Fabulous. As for which products Nichola recommends, she tells us: “Some of my favourite tanning products are St Tropez Self Tan Classic Bronzing Mousse and Tan Luxe – The Water and James Read’s – Sleep Mask Tan.”
