Recipe: Treat yourself and your kids to an all natural bubble bath

After reading the ingredients on some lotions and potions for kids it can be stressful running a bath for your children – rather than a soothing bedtime routine. We take a look at a recipe for an all natural, alternative method.


While parents go crazy obsessing over the foods that go INTO their children’s bodies, what goes ON them can often go by the wayside.

And, it’s important to be aware which ingredients could be potentially toxic for your health. What goes on your skin goes into your body as the skin is our largest organ. 

But rather than scouring the labels and attempting to decipher the good from the bad why not whip up a batch of your own all natural bubble bath which you know is safe for them…and you.

Here’s how.

How to make your own bubble bath 


Although the list of ingredients can often appear endless on the back of some bubble baths, there’s only a few you’ll need for your DIY version.

Liquid castile soap – This is coconut-based soap, which by itself doesn’t create bubbles.

Vegetable glycerin – Glycerin is a compound that is odourless, colourless and non-toxic. Adding it to the bubble bath mixture helps make more suds and make them last longer.

Essential oils – Steer clear of chemical fragrances by using essential oils instead. Try a calming one like Lavender.

Egg White – The white of an egg also helps create stronger, longer-lasting bubbles.



  • 180ml liquid castile soap
  • 60ml vegetable glycerin
  • 5-8 drops of diluted essential oils – see below for some safe onesfor children and skip them entirely if your baby is under 3 months.
  • 1 egg white


It’s as simple as this!

  1. Mix the castile soap, glycerin, egg white and essential oil together in a bowl and pour into a glass jar for storage.
  2. Add a couple of splashes while running the bath water until you have enough bubbles.

Essential oils warning for children

Essential oils are extremely concentrated so they should be used sparingly and be diffused in carrier oil before use with children.

Clary sage

Juniper berry
