Perhaps you’re wondering if you can slather on some olive oil or mashed avocado in a bid to help remove wrinkles fast before a night out? And, the answer is yes — absolutely.
Whether it’s the humble banana or a dab of castor oil under tired puffy eyes, there’s a wealth of natural skin smoothing wonders that you can create in your own kitchen.
We have put together five of our favourite homemade face masks so you can enjoy some inexpensive pampering and self-care from the comfort of home.
Bananas aren’t just an ideal ingredient for breakfast and baking, they make a fantastic face mask too. Because they’re rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants this mashable fruit is great for rejuvenating your skin and combating wrinkles.
Try squashing up two ripe bananas twice a week and putting the paste on wrinkles under your eyes or other fine lines on your face and neck which you’re eager to diminish. It might be a bit sticky but leave it on for at least half an hour before washing it off with warm water. If you like, layer of your favourite facial oil straight afterwards.
This takes a little preparation but it’s well worth it. Soak a handful of almonds overnight in a cup of milk and then peel them and grind them up in the milk to make a paste. Apply it to your face and leave it until it dries before washing it off.
This once a week face mask works because almonds are packed with vitamin E which helps restore the elasticity of the skin. Milk and almonds also make a great moisturiser.
Not only are tomatoes rich in the antioxidant, lycopene — which is a natural sunscreen – they also boost the skin’s pro-collagen levels and keeps it’s elasticity.
Research suggests just a tablespoon’s worth of tomato paste a day can have a huge impact on your complexion, but you can also make a tomato face mask too.
Cut a tomato in half and dip it in sea salt. Gently scrub your face for 60 seconds before leaving the pulp on your face for a further 5 minutes. Wash it off with water and hey presto! Repeat this twice a week.
It doesn’t taste so great but castor oil is fantastic for fighting wrinkles and you don’t even have to eat it to reap the rewards. Castor oil enhances the production of collagen and elastin in the skin. Each night rub it onto the affected areas using a cotton ball and leave overnight. This remedy has been shown to diminish the signs of ageing over time.
It’s probably not a combination you’d want to eat but yoghurt and olive oil is one smooth operator when it comes to fighting fine lines. If you’ve been known to suffer with pillow face for an entire day then you’re not alone. But fear not, there’s a quick and easy way to tame it.
Mix four tablespoons of yoghurt with a tablespoon of olive oil and smear it onto you face and neck. Leave it for 20 minutes before washing off. Repeat twice a week.
The reason it works is because the natural enzymes and lactic acid in yoghurt cause the pores to shrink, which helps tighten the skin. Yoghurt has also been shown to reduce the appearance of scars.
