Zinc: The humble mineral that boosts your skin’s glow

-Apr 19, Jenny Paul, Beauty -

Stress and time spent inside in central heating during the winter months, plus a lack of vitamin D boosting natural sunlight, often result in a dull, lifeless complexion. The answer? Making sure your body gets an adequate supply of zinc, which is known by experts as the beauty mineral.

If you’re on a pre-summer workout kick at the moment, or have been munching on lots of sugar packed goodies over Easter, have you noticed that you’re more prone to breakouts and spotty skin? Sweating and weight loss wipe out our body’s stores of zinc – which is a vital mineral when it comes to having blemish-free, glowing skin.

If you reward yourself with a few glasses of wine at the weekend, following a hardcore schedule throughout the week, alcohol also depletes your body’s store of zinc – which means double trouble when it comes to keeping skin looking gorgeous.

A zinc deficiency can be the root cause of acne, and zinc’s essential for beautiful skin because it is a key member of a group of enzymes that help the body maintain its collagen supply – which help keep wrinkles and sagging skin at bay.

Unfortunately, it’s fairly challenging to get enough zinc into our bodies from diet alone.

Foods which naturally contain zinc

Foods which contain zinc are; dark chocolate, garlic, wheatgerm, chickpeas, beef and oysters. If you’re a fan of sprinkling seeds, plants and nuts into smoothies or on salads, then the following are also great sources of zinc, if eaten raw (cooking often depletes zinc).

  • Poppy seeds
    Pecans
    Cashews
    Pine nuts
    Macadamia nuts
    Sunflower seeds
    Sesame seeds
    Spinach
    Spirulina
    Seaweed (Irish moss, kelp, nori)

Zinc’s health benefits

  1. Promotes cell division, cell repair and cell growth – which is essential for skin health.
  2. Production of T-lymphocyte white blood cells – which is essential for immune health.
  3. Aids the lymphatic organs and liver eliminate waste – which is essential for glowing skin.
  4. Present in insulin and helps to balance blood sugar – which helps prevent premature ageing.

But that’s not all, zinc is involved in more body functions than any other mineral, and its other essential functions include:

  1. Maintaining healthy skin, hair and nails.
  2. Regulating the skin’s oil glands.
  3. Contributing to fertility, reproduction and sexual function.
  4. Protecting the body from free radical damage.
  5. Sustaining a strong immune system.
  6. Repairing muscles.
  7. Healing wounds.
  8. Ensuring athletic performance, strength, endurance and recovery.
  9. Fighting off colds and flu.

Our hectic lifestyles tend to deplete our levels of zinc. So in summary, it’s worth supplementing with zinc, or taking a targeted supplement which has zinc in it to ensure that you are getting enough of this essential mineral.
